American Soprano Chelsea Bonagura, owner of Chelsea Lauren Studios, is both a professional opera singer and highly sought after vocal instructor. Equally passionate about performing and teaching, Ms. Bonagura has enjoyed an active career in both for over 11 years. Students of her studio consistently perform leading roles, and many have gained entry into some of the nation’s best performing art colleges, universities, and young artist programs. In addition, Ms. Bonagura regularly works with performers pursuing professional careers in opera, musical theater, and pop.
This past season, Ms. Bonagura joined Palm Beach Opera as the Cunegonde cover in Candide (mainstage), Susanna in Le Nozze di Figaro (family performance), and Barbarina in Le Nozze di Figaro (mainstage). She then returned to Opera Roanoke to make her role début as Mimi in La Bohème under the baton of Metropolitan Opera condutor, Steven White.
In the prior 2016-17 season, Ms. Bonagura made her New York City Opera début as a featured dancer in Alekko/Paggliaci as well as an ensemble member in La Campana Somersa. Later that season with the New York City Opera, she débuted the role of Water in the North American premiere of Los Elementos. To finish the season, she sang the title role of Rebecca Manchester in a new opera by Kevin Wilt entitled Prix Fixe (Fresh Squeezed Opera Company) and covered the role of Micaëla in Carmen (Martina Arroyo Prelude to Performance).
Ms. Bonagura is an avid performer of new operatic works and created the roles of Princesa and Bambina in Car Crash Opera by Michaela Eremiasova, Jairo Duarte-Lopez, as well as the role of Mei in A Dream of Flight by Sarana Chou. She has also appeared as a soloist with orchestras around the country including the Charlotte Symphony and the Winston-Salem Symphony in their performances of Handel's Messiah and Bruckner's Psalm 150. The Winston-Salem Journal noted, "the soaring dramatic soprano voice of Ms. Bonagura added brilliance to the work,” and Classical Voice of North Carolina hailed her as “a star in the making.”
Ms. Bonagura holds a Bachelors of Music degree from the prestigious Eastman School of Music, a Masters of Music Degree from UNC-Greensboro, and has also trained extensively with internationally famed soprano, Diana Soviero. In addition to her career as a professional opera singer, Ms. Bonagura is adept at singing as well as teaching many different styles of music. She uses her knowledge of classical technique to produce a healthy, sustainable, and unique sound in each singer and then tailors it to fit each musical genre respectively.
